Searching with images instead of words

Sometimes I wonder how earthlings managed to get information before the discovery of the internet and Google’s search engine sometime in 1997.

Search engines have revolutionized the way by which we get access to information by making it very easy to scan the internet and get whatever information you need. With the right keywords or search queries, you can get information regarding any topic on this planet or even out of this planet.

It has been said, that people learn new skills just from ‘Googling’ stuff from the comfort of their devices, from learning about every topic possible ranging from cooking to repairing our devices. Even things as complicated as building a house can be learned by using search engines and as such, I usually say “With Google, you don’t have any excuse to be stupid.”

Have you ever wished you could discover where a certain image originated from, or wished you could find out other information about an image? Finding out the solution to a picture puzzle? Your ability to search with that image as the query could help you out here.

Normally, words are used in search engines but with Google, who controls 95% of the search engine market, images could be used as your search query.

How to search with an image

This process is normally referred to as a Reverse Image Search

On a PC


  1. Open your browser like Chrome, Firefox, Safari
  2. Go to Google Images https://images.google.com/
  3. Click Search by image.
  4. Click Upload an Image > Choose file or Browse.
  5. Select a picture from your computer.
  6. Click Open or Choose.
You could also drag and drop the image on Chrome or firefox


On your mobile device

There are two ways to achieve this on a mobile device either on Android or iOS

  1. Using your Chrome browser you will have to request for the desktop version of the Google image site above before following the steps highlighted above
  2. Secondly is through the use of the Google App

  •  Go to the Google lens icon in the search bar

  • At the top right corner, you can access your photo library and select the desired image

  • After selecting the desired image Google Lens will show you similar images to browse through
